Area Guide - El RompidoEl Rompido is a fishing village near Cartaya, fast becoming a famous spot for sun and fun seekers. The little town is protected from the Atlantic Ocean by a long spit of land called 'La Flecha', The Arrow. This makes a safe anchorage for the local fishing boats, and also a perfect playground for water sports, from paddling at the water's edge to flying over the waves with the windsurfers and kite surfers, to motor boating, canoeing and sailing. El Rompido's many friendly restaurants are renowned for their seafood dishes, fresh from the catch of the day. There is a great variety including sole, seabass, seabream, swordfish, fresh tuna fish, langoustines, prawns, shrimps, and the tasty little conquinas, tiny mussels prepared in garlic and olive oil. There are locally grown tomatoes and fruit, with speciality cheeses and the delicious hams of the area, jamón iberico. There is a large sports bar, serving international food from local ingredients. Live TV provides coverage of world events, and there are many cosy corners to chat in. There are several other trendy bars in the town square with views of the estuary, or up at La Marina, near the lighthouse, where spectacular views of the sunsets can be enjoyed, and where partying continues well into the night. There are chiringuitos or beach bars serving local and international dishes and pulling in the young crowd with music, singing and dancing. El Rompido Golf Club provides expert coaching from a top-class professional team and the club is proud of its two pretty golf courses, set amongst hundreds of stone pine trees, designed to challenge players and reward them with pleasing sea views and good food from the balcony restaurant at the club house. There is a five star hotel between the two golf courses, and a four-star hotel overlooking the marina. Three more marinas are to be built in the area. There is a go-karting track nearby and also a summer Aquapark for 'children' of all ages. There is a beach at El Rompido, and just a 5-minute ferry-ride away, across the estuary to La Flecha, is one of Andalucía's longest, wildest and most beautiful beaches, peaceful and protected on the river side, wild and exciting on the Atlantic side. The vibrant weekend and holiday scene at El Rompido attracts visitors from Huelva, Seville and Madrid during all seasons, and increasingly people from the UK and Northern Europe, those who appreciate the genuine Spanish atmosphere of this place. |
